10:03am: A light at the end of the tunnel
Finally, an aura of hope circling our lives! After what seems like an eternity, but actually a matter of months, it appears as though our health issues may be behind us. YAY! Plus, the doldrums of winter are slowly passing as we have gained an hour of day light! Double "YAY"! So, we are emerging from the cave with a new, positive attitude and goal! What?! A goal? Yup. As some of you may know, we have been on a "5 year plan" to start another chapter in a warmer climate. Well, 3 years have passed and we now have our sights on the light. The plan is to make the move late summer to early fall of 2011. We will both be celebrating our 50th birthday that spring with our friends. What better time to make a life change?! So, we have compiled a "to do" list which we will likely be adding to and crossing off as we plug away. One thing for sure...the snow shovel will NOT be making the trip!

2:46pm: Calgon take me away...
Weather in Maine SUCKS. We have about 2 months of good weather. You see we have more than 4 seasons...you have to add Mud season and Black Fly season to the mix. Then late October through November it's not "autumn"...Oh, no...that is September and the first part of October. November is pre-winter season...very raw, damp weather. I guess it's part of an acclimation process. Who knows. Anyway, the thought and plan of moving to AZ or NM has kept me going without losing my mind. Oh, I can't say I didn't have any "What the hell am I doing here?" moments, but for the most part I sucked it up.
Mother Nature gave us a couple bonus weather weeks recently. You know, just enough to start that acclimation process in the other direction. Well, those days are over for now. Yesterday and today the skies have opened and rained and rained and rained upon us! Of course, last weekend we started "feeling" the weather change. Yup, the old aching joints, cold nose and toes...a reminder not to get too comfy with the perfect weather...that was just a tease.
We live in an old house 100-ish years old. I bought it about 4-5 years ago with no intention of staying there throughout the life of the mortgage...30 years, yeah right! I've been keeping my fingers crossed that the market will hold out and the house can be our ticket out west. Well, we all know how that has panned out. Thanks G.W. Oh yeah, and thanks for the "up to $600"...a little too little, too late, I'd say.
Okay, back to the rain. Last pre-winter season we developed a leak. Of course, it wasn't in a place where I could ignore it. Oh no, right at the head of our bed-on my side. So, I had Joe Blow come by and patch the ancient metal roof which now has a lovely patchwork quilt look to it...with earth tones...mainly the color of RUST! Great. Just when I thought all was well..phew, no spring rains...here they are...and here is the leak, again.
Not only am I paying $3.59/gallon of gas to get to work (42 miles one way), and $3.94/gallon of oil to heat the house, and $100+ weekly for food...but, now I get to have a new roof put on. Can you say "so long equity"?!
"Hey Augusta, Maine. I guess we'll be here a bit longer".
Thanks G.W.

9:09am: Connies' surgery
GF had her shoulder surgery this past Friday so I'm posting an update for her. What was supposed to be a quick 1 hour bone spur removal ended up being a 2 hour rebuild the shoulder surgery. What was supposed to be a 6-week recovery time is now a MINIMUM 4-month recovery. Yup, the doc said that everything he could do to a shoulder he had to do for her. Let's see a "very large" rotator cuff tear, "the biggest bone spur" he's seen in years, bicep repair, collar bone repair, tendon repair. Not everything could be done laparoscopically, so she has 2 incisions across the top of her arm, also.
To say the least she is a hurting unit. She is in the padded, strapped in every which way sling. Oh yeah, did I mention all the arthritis, too? About 20+ years ago she dislocated up her shoulder, so this is a result from that and then some...
I feel so bad for her. I hate seing her in this pain. Not to mention all the plans she had on hold for now.

5:27pm: Tid-bits
In the past few weeks, actually months there have been some trying times for a few of my friends. One close friend has been going through radiation and chemo for cervical cancer. This week wraps up her daily trips to the hospital. She has 2 weeks to regroup and gain some strength back and then she goes in for a couple days for internal radiation....something I've never heard of and scared the hell out of me! Apparently, this is common?? I hope the hell so. She then gets 2 more weeks off and gets another round of internal radiation. She had a PET scan about a month ago and all looked fine...no traces of anything brewing. Last week she had a mammogram and something is showing up in her films. They can't get a good shot of it, so she is now going to have an MRI on her breast. She is so tired and discouraged. Can't blame her there. I have been trying to be encouraging, but frankly I'm pretty damn scared...both for her and for myself. The thought and possibility of this all taking a turn for the worse is real.

I also have some friends who have been together for 5+ years. In the past 5 months-ish one of them has been having what we call an emotional affair. She is all wrapped up in this woman and denies being anything other than "friends", yet will not bring her partner along on the weekend (supposed) "hanging out"s. It is quite obvious to the circle of friends that M is being taken for a ride and needs to put her foot down and send the other packing. Easy for us to say...we've all been there at least once...hanging on to hope. We got the same advise, but it wasn't until we were at our wits end could we let go. UGH. My heart goes out to both of them. M for having to deal with this and C for not realizing what she is doing.

Then there is my ex. We had a great relationship even after the breakup...pretty much a duo. We've been through a lot together in our 5 years as partners and another 5 years as best buddies. In comes her new woman "IQ" and out I go. "IQ" doesn't like us and doesn't want to do things with us (Connie and I) as a couple....in other words ever! Therefore, in order not to cause problems apparently I have been pushed to the side. We haven't had a conversation for months...oh yeah, a quick phone call at work last week to get a phone number. I've left messages to call and chat, with no return call. I've suggested we go to the movies, invited them over for dinner, etc. nada. There's always an excuse. So, we don't even offer anymore. When I have tried to discuss this with her in the past it becomes a huge argument and we get nowhere. She says they just like being together and spending all their time together. Well, I've been there and done that, too...and it does not make for a healthy relationship. I actually think this all stems from jealousy. "IQ" being jealous of our very close relationship. Combine that with her insecurity and voila...someone gets left out in the cold...but everyone loses in the end.

Have I mentioned how much I hate the weather in Maine? For example, right now it is 81 degress with 70% humidity. Oh, did I mention the AC isn't working? I feel like a damp, nasty dish rag. I can't tell you how anxious I am to pack up the family and get the hell out of dodge!

2:39pm: Spirits and sightings and poltergeists...Oh My!
There was a whole lot of "happenins'" going on in Augusta Thursday night. And it appears that our place IS the happenin' place!
Let's see...it all started 3 years ago when the broker sent me a copy of the listing for the house. There clearly was a white apparition in the front window (which the realtor never noticed) and the porch light was on. When we went to see the house it was, and had been, vacant and upon trying the porch light found that it did not and still does not work. How interesting...

Well, as you all know I bought the house. What you don't all know is that we have had quite a bit of unexplainable activity. It seems to come in spurts. Not only have Connie and I experienced it, but "P" as well as my sister...not to mention Henry! We have had spoons, a book of stamps (in "P"'s room), food and most recently a half bottle of wine "disappear"...if you want to call it that. These things have not reappeared yet...at least not in our space or physical plane.

We have all experienced footsteps (my sister included), most recently "P" heard; who she thought was either Connie or me; pacing for 2 hours during the night. There have been voices/mumblings coming up through the duct work from the basement into our bedroom. We've had what can best be explained as flashes of shadows. Also, items have been moved and set back, centered in obscure places.

None of these things have given us the willies or freaked any of us out. It has become somewhat of a joke around the house. However, I will say that for myself the coal bin in the basement has creeped me out. I have never been in there and have not looked directly into it...only quick side glances. Connie is very uncomfortable in the basement as well.

I fill some of my co-workers in on the happenings. Come to find out one of my friends at work has a friend who is psychic. She keeps it pretty hush-hush, but does go to houses and does readings. "D" has gone with her on several occasions and is always amazed. She also takes pictures at night in cemetaries and old houses. Orbs and transluscent shapes appear often when they photos are developed. All very cool.

Well, I hooked up with this woman "R" through "D". I spoke with her on the phone only to make an appointment. She asked both "D" and myself not to tell her anything. We agreed.

"R" followed me home from work last Thursday. Saturday was the full moon, so she wanted to come within a 3 day period of the moon and already had an appt. for Saturday. When she was taking her case out of her car in the driveway, she told me she saw a little girl in the 3rd floor window when she pulled in. Also, she said there was a man walking around in the barn...in the attic and back down. I welcomed her in the house to meet the rest of us!

The three of us sat down with her in the sunroom. She told us about herself while she was taking out her camera and setting up her recorders. She is psychic and works mostly with the para-normal. She has been aware of this since she was a child. She said she hears voices, gets physical feelings, sees snapshot-like visions, etc. She said we have many people around us. There were/are people who we know have passed and then there are those who are with the house...which made things very interesting.

"Who is Therese? Or Terry?" None of us know of anyone who has passed with that name. She said that the names she gives us will only be of those who have passed. "Who hears the pacing?" We pointed out that "P" had just heard the hours long pacing from our bedroom door to the bathroom. It is a woman. She is very worried about "P". She sits on her bed and paces at night. She wants to make her feel better.

She also saw a man and Therese in our living room. It was their wake in the days when the bodies were shown in the home. Therese was there first. We then went to the attic, which is where it all came together. No sooner had we gone through the door when "R"'s breathing became labored. The attic was where Therese went for peace. She would pray. She'd watch the kids outside play, she couldn't go outside and play with them. She passed from a respiratory illness...not TB, but pneumonia or asthma. The woman watching over "P" is her (Therese's) mother. She is distraught about being unable to make Therese better and wants to make "P" better.

We then went into the barn attic. Lots of sadness. The father took his life there. Because he was unable to take care of his family, he now is taking care of the house. He is keeping evil out and walks throughout the house and barn.

The last stop was the basement. Not a good space. With the lights off, I headed down with "R". She immediatley headed for the coal bin and started cussing, talking to someone, yelling at him, telling him, "GET OUT! YOU"RE NOT WELCOME HERE!",etc. She was livid. We have, hopefully, had a pedophile in the coal bin area. She spread kosher salt, said a prayer and told him to leave. With her advise, we have done the same every night since. I'm buying some bright spraypaint and will be painting that area.

All through the house she was taking pictures, sometimes like she was following someone's steps. She was at the house for 1 1/2 hours and left looking and feeling totally drained.

The whole experience was incredible. She confirmed we had a poltergeist and explained much of that to us. We have many spirits and much sadness. However, nothing harmful.

I spoke to her this morning. She picked up a weak male voice on the recorders, but is unable to get a clear message. Also, nothing on the photos. If it were actually dark we would have had a better chance. I'd like to have her over again before we make the big move...next time in the dark.

It's noe Connie's turn to fill in the cracks of this story. This is my abbreviated version.

8:18am: We're home
Connie got discharged late yesterday afternoon. We got home around 6:00. There's no place like home. She slept pretty well last night. It's hard for her to get in & out of bed between her back and her stomach muscles. Now that her back pain isn't excruciating she is feeling her belly pain. There are 5 incisions where they did the procedure from...one has a bruise about 3"x8". Her pain is improving, though and her back is not quite back to it's original pain. Fluid, fluid, fluid...she has to have 62oz. daily. We are keeping a log so she doesn't get dehydrated. I'm sure she'll be posting soon.

7:18am: Connie update
Thanks for all the good thoughts sent our way. The surgery went very well and she has no pain from it. However, her back is in SCREAM mode. She laid on that friggin' gurney for way too long. When she woke up from surgery she was telling them she needed to get up (sit up) because of her back pain. Five hours later in recovery, when they finally let me in, they realized she was not just being beligerant! JC!!! How about contacting the familt member??? We got her in a recliner and they brought her to her room after 5 hours of a pain med cocktail, she was finally comfortable, sitting up! Huh, now why didn't they think of that sooner! We are not impressed with this place. It seems as though she's at her wits end before they give her stuff for her pain. I don't know if it's becuase she has an empty "pouch" or because they didn't expect to have her in pain from an other area, or what! JC!!! Needless to say, it's been a long day + and we are hoping they'll just discharge her this afternoon so she can get in our bed and rest! JC!!!

She did want me to tell you all "Hi, my back hurts like hell"!

I'll keep you posted...
